Personal Background

I grew up in the Midwest (St. Louis, Missouri) and was raised by a father who was a first-generation college student and a mother who was a middle school spanish teacher and afterschool educator until retirement. I am the oldest of three daughters who went on to be the first in our family to go to graduate school (Masters in Public Administration, The George Washington University). Sports and being an athlete were my identity that gave me early lessons in leadership as the captain of my soccer and golf teams in high school. And my strong desire to make an impact has evolved over the years from someone who was deeply competitive to hopefully doing a better job showing that winning is not just about the score but how you bring others along and who your teammates are while trying to do your best at something.

Family Life

I met my spouse in Washington DC at a Halloween party some colleagues were hosting. We were both in DC working on building strong careers in neuroscience at the NIH and education policy at the US Department of Education. We started our family in Annapolis, Maryland, having our first child (Henry) and shortly after moved to Atlanta, Georgia where we had our second child (Lilly). And in 2013, we moved to the West Coast to be closer to family in Seattle and Montana. We love spending time outdoors together, watching Mariners baseball games, walking our dog, driving to the mountains, hanging out at the lake and visiting the San Juan Islands often.
